This morning at my rotary club meeting we had Mike Johnson, director of the electronic crimes office of the Louisiana attorney general’s office speak to our club. This unit began in 2002 with 5 people. They now have 25 members. One of the topics Mike discussed was electronic crimes dealing with the elderly. Mike reminded us that there are people constantly trying to scam the elderly through the internet and email. These people send emails to the elderly asking them to send money for various reasons. Mike said there have been several cases of this reported in Ascension Parish and it is very difficult to catch the criminals because they are often outside of this country. I receive numerous of these emails daily and while it is annoying, I just delete them. Many elderly who have lost some of their cognitive abilities may not know to just delete them and that’s how they can be victimized. So please make sure your loved ones who are elderly and regular computer users are aware of these criminals and are on their guard to protect themselves against them.
